We are hiring a Senior Industrial Designer to join Steelcase in our Grand Rapids, MI office.

Duties:

Leverage a deep understanding of research insights, design, technology skills, and process knowledge to conceptualize and develop ideas into solutions that will improve work environments. Conceptualize and develop products, utilizing extensive experience in design, software, and space design. Influence teams and leadership using storytelling aptitude. Lead as the voice of design to share design priorities and seek alignment across business units, including manufacturing, supply chain, marketing, and engineering. Collaborate with external vendors, individual contributors, and senior leadership to align on design concepts/direction, processes, and resource planning. Coach and assist in professional development for industrial designers in the group. Develop the product through thorough knowledge of product applications and human factors. Capture and prioritize user needs, friction points, application studies, chooser needs, and attributes. Employ empathy canvas mapping to develop an understanding of the product’s intended users. Implement2x2 prioritization matrices and thinking frameworks to prioritize tasks during product development. Conduct design research and UX testing surrounding users and choosers/buyers, using Day in the Life scenarios and Journey mapping. Navigate the Product Development & Launch process comprehensively through understanding manufacturing processes, such as injection molding, sheet metal forming, stamping, and machining. Conduct market validation in partnership with the Marketing team. Apply marketing and financial principles to attain business/industry knowledge. ** Position requires 20% domestic and International Travel.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree (or foreign academic equivalent) in Industrial Design, User Experience design, Environmental Design Architecture, UX Design/ interior design or related and 5 years of experience in the job offered or related. Experience must include: experience in design software skills including Solidworks, Fusion, Sketchup, Adobe Suite (which includes Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign) and rendering software (Keyshot, Vray and Enscape); experience in aspects of design including hand and digital sketching, low-fidelity prototyping, cost estimation, computer-aided design (CAD), 3D rendering, generative design, photography (with focus on lighting and framing), and digital drawing; experience using Revit, AutoCad, Rhino, Grasshopper and CET/PCON; experience in design research and UX testing skills surrounding users and choosers/buyers, including creating Day in the Life scenarios, Journey mapping, capturing and prioritizing user needs, friction points, and Empathy canvas mapping; experience in implementing 2x2 prioritization matrices and thinking frameworks in design work; experience in global trend forecasting across macro cultural drivers, fashion, architecture, and consumer goods; knowledge of Universal design and accessible design. ** Position requires 20% domestic and International Travel.
