Mohs Technician - Dermatology * Days - 40hrs/wk

Shift: Days

General Summary:

The Mohs Technician is responsible for assisting the physician during Mohs surgery while accurately preparing and processing histologic specimens for microscopic evaluation and review by the Mohs Surgeon.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school degree (or GED) required.
  • Minimum: Completion of Medical Assistant program through an accredited school or program that meets the criteria of a medical assistant program, such as a military-prepared corpsman or medic.
  • Associate or Bachelor in an Applied Science program preferred.
  • BLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
  • At least 6 months of full-time experience in the past 10 years in Mohs surgery as Mohs Medical Assistant, Mohs Technician, or Histology Technician required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates the ability to follow established department policies and procedures in an accurate and precise manner.
  2. Receives and processes tissue specimens using frozen sectioning equipment to prepare microscope slides for viewing of the surgeon.
  3. Conduct staining procedures on tissue samples to facilitate accurate visualization of skin cancers on microscope slides.
  4. Maintains accurate patient identification on all containers, slides, diagrams, and paperwork at all times.
  5. Collaborates with Dermatopathologists, Surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to contribute to the overall success of Mohs surgeries. Provides direct support during Mohs surgical cases as needed.
  6. Appropriately label, file, and store Mohs slides.
  7. Maintain and operate laboratory and surgical equipment including cryostat and stain line and ensure preventative maintenance is performed.
  8. Maintains Mohs laboratory according to CLIA and OSHA standards.
  9. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action as needed.
  10. Monitors and maintains inventory of lab supplies and equipment. Receives and verifies laboratory shipments to ensure accuracy, quantity, and quality of stock. Organize stock and equipment.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols, and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning, and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
