Job Summary

The Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining lathes to prepare pipes and piping components, ensuring their precise assembly and integration into a functional piping system to meet and exceed customer expectations. This role requires a solid understanding of machining processes and adherence to quality and safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are required, along with other responsibilities that may be assigned:

1. Machine Operation

  • Set up and operate manual lathes to machine parts according to specifications.
  • Monitor machine operations to ensure precision and adherence to project requirements.
  • Adjust machine settings as needed to achieve desired results.
  • Weld pipes as required to integrate into piping systems.

2. Quality Control

  • Inspect machined parts using tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Identify and address any defects or deviations in finished products.
  • Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to the foreman.

3. Maintenance and Safety

  • Perform routine maintenance on machines, including cleaning and lubrication.
  • Identify and report any machine malfunctions or safety concerns.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and rules while using proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

4. Collaboration and Documentation

  • Work closely with supervisors, engineers, and team members to meet production goals.
  • Maintain accurate production records, including part counts, setups, and adjustments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency in basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, and division.
  • Ability to use a calculator.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed but straightforward written or oral instructions.
  • Problem-solving skills to handle standardized situations with a few concrete variables.
  • Certification or ability to pass Hi-Lo operator’s exam is required.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of lathe operation experience preferred.
  • Welding experience is a plus.

  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibrations.
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Must pass substance abuse screening.
