General Summary:

The Perfusionist is a highly trained member of the open-heart surgery program responsible for the operation of the heart-lung bypass machine. The perfusionist employs highly technical, mechanical, and electronic devices which monitor, support, or replace the functions of the patient's cardiovascular and/or pulmonary systems. The perfusionist also operates devices used for autologous blood transfusion in the operating rooms and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to assist in the monitoring and ongoing operations of the perfusion function in Cardiothoracic surgery

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Two (2) years’ perfusionist experience preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited program in Cardiovascular Perfusion required.
  • Maintains Certification as a Clinical Perfusionist from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • Demonstrated competence in building positive physician and staff relationships and effectively establish rapport easily even with potentially antagonistic individuals.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset for developing skills for planning, organizing, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of programs, projects and business operations.
  • Must have extensive knowledge in human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and surgical technique.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Operate heart-lung bypass machine to achieve total bypass, coronary perfusion, circulatory assist, partial bypass, hypothermic perfusion, respiratory assist or regional perfusion.
  2. Perform physiological measurements of hemodynamic functions.
  3. Control anticoagulation as required for cardiopulmonary bypass and other life support devices.
  4. Perform, operate, and transfer intra-aortic balloon pump, autologous blood salvaging systems (cell saver), ventricular assist device, ECMO for transfers and other equipment.
  5. Utilize monitoring systems and related equipment
  6. Modify current equipment or use new equipment circuitry and techniques to meet patient needs.
  7. Confer with cardiac surgeons to become acquainted with nature of surgery and gather information to be used during set-up procedures of heart-lung bypass machine.
  8. Coordinate blood requirements for cardiac surgery schedule with the Blood Bank.
  9. Assist in maintaining inventory parts for heart-lung bypass machine operation and maintenance.
  10. Process patient care orders using the electronic medical record.
  11. Actively promote patient safety and quality of patient care.
  12. Display consistent proficiency in using AIDET when communicating with patients, visitors, physicians, peers, managers, volunteers, internal and external customers.
  13. Participates in new colleague on-boarding and ongoing mentorship for the perfusionist team.
  14. Participate in data collection for quality outcomes as it relates to perfusion services. Collaborate in quality initiatives related to CT surgery.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned as it relates to both clinical and administrative responsibilities. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
