OB Care Technician 2 - Obstetrics * Days - 36hrs/wk

Shift: Days

General Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the OB Technician 2 provides basic nursing care to patients, function as a scrub tech during a Cesarean Section, performs related tasks necessary to the functioning of the department, and is responsible for clerical and receptionist activities both in Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider.
  • Must meet one of the following requirements:
    1. Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or
    2. Current enrollment (and continued progression) in a health science program required with completion of nursing fundamentals course and/or one clinical rotation preferred. Equivalent enrollment considered will include but is not limited to: Nursing School, Pre-PA School, Medical School, or closely related health science program, or
    3. Equivalent experience. Equivalent experience considered will include but is not limited to: Medical Assistant, Paramedic, Medical First Responder, EMT, Nurse Tech, Resident Aid/Assistant, or LPN.
  • Surgical technologist certification, or successful completion of a surgical technologist program with eligibility for surgical technologist certification, preferred.
  • Two years of experience in an acute clinical environment or experience in labor and delivery, preferred.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  1. Surgery
    1. Assemble C-section charts.
    2. Set up surgical instruments, case carts, and suture types.
    3. Apply the principles of asepsis in setting up and maintaining the sterile field.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of the sequence of events for Cesarean Section surgical procedure.
    5. Display working knowledge and dexterity in the use of required instrumentation and equipment including:
    6. Bovie
    7. Suction machine
    8. Surgical Lights
    9. Operating table
    10. Scrubs on assigned c-sections, handles surgical instruments, sutures, sponges, etc., and anticipates the needs of the Obstetrician and assists as directed.
    11. Maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles and instruments, and is jointly responsible with circulating RN for ensuring that all are accounted for during and after the operation.
    12. Ensure correct distribution of specimens.
    13. Perform cleaning, stocking and set up of the OR. Also responsible for daily damp dusting of each OR.
    14. Remain calm and function competently during emergency surgeries.
    15. Orders and ensures an adequate stock of patient care supplies, proper functioning, maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  2. Triage
    1. Transport patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or ambulatory from ER to triage or from Triage to other locations within the hospital.
    2. Clean and stock triage bays
    3. Maintain adequate supplies available
    4. QC Machines: Glucometers and Clintek.
    5. Patient Testing of urine using Clintek and patient testing of blood for glucose levels.
    6. Perform delegated nursing care of the triage patient including but not limited to vital signs, weight, blood glucose, nutrition, and removal of refuge.
    7. Scan documents to chart
  3. Labor and Delivery
    1. Set up delivery cart and be knowledgeable about types of sutures needed during a vaginal delivery.
    2. Apply the principles of asepsis when setting up and maintaining the field.
    3. Demonstrate the knowledge of the sequence of events for a Vaginal Delivery.
    4. Perform delegated nursing care of the labor and delivery patient including but not limited to vital signs, blood glucose, position changes, nutrition (passing fluids), and removal of refuge.
    5. Actively participate in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work environment.
    6. QC glucometer. Patient testing of blood glucose levels.
    7. Orders and ensures an adequate stock of patient care supplies, proper functioning, maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Ensures safe equipment operation.
    8. Transport patients, equipment, supplies and specimens as needed.
    9. Perform terminal take down and cleaning and stocking of delivery room. Also responsible for daily damp dusting of the labor rooms.
    10. Attend and participate in in-services and meetings related to job description.
    11. Demonstrate flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.
  4. Mother/Baby
    1. Assists patients with ambulation and hygiene.
    2. Assist with incentive spirometer use.
    3. Perform perineal and catheter care. Removal of catheter on post-operative patients.
    4. Applying and removing ice bags.
    5. Applying and removing sequential compression devices.
    6. Transferring patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
    7. Performing infant baths.
    8. Changing diapers on infants
    9. QC glucometer. Patient testing of blood glucose levels.
    10. Assist patients with nutrition. This includes passing snacks and fluids, ordering and maintaining nourishments for the department, performing intake and output, removing patient trays, bottle feeding infants and documenting infant feedings.
    11. Obtain and document maternal weights and vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, SpO2 and respirations).
    12. Obtain and document infant weights, measurements, and vital signs (temperature, apical pulse, respirations).
    13. Performs newborn testing including Newborn Screens, Hearing Screens, Bilirubin Screens CCHD screens and completes applicable documentation.
    14. Obtain, label and deliver specimens, including urine specimens and meconium.
    15. Other duties as delegated by RN.
  5. Clerical
    1. Maintain current patient information to facilitate efficient and safe patient care delivery. This includes updating log books, updating patient information on the computer; and coordinating admissions, discharges, and transfers with other departments as applicable.
    2. Clerical duties as assigned including assembling of Labor and Delivery charts, maintain HUGS log book, Telergy, answer phones, make ID band kits, scan documents to chart
    3. Assist internal and external customers who enter or call the department. This includes greeting and directing patients, visitors, and hospital personnel; receiving phone calls and directing them appropriately; answering patient call lights and directing the request appropriately; referring requests from patients and family to nursing staff.
    4. Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workspace for all members of the healthcare team to facilitate flow of patient care activities. This includes maintain adequate quantities of forms, supplies, and equipment.
    5. Assist RN with transfer documentation printing for all maternal/neonatal transfers.
  6. Equipment/Supplies and Infection Control
    1. Use equipment and supplies safely and appropriately. This includes operating electronic blood pressure cuffs, patient beds, checking and documenting refrigerator temperatures, and cleaning equipment between patient use.
    2. Maintains and stocks patient rooms.
    3. Performs QC on glucometers.
    4. Functions to control the spread of infection by using universal precautions, aseptic technique, bagging and disposing of soiled linens, and replacing full sharps containers.
    5. Performs damp dusting in high risk areas per Infection Prevention recommendations
    6. Maintain supplies on PPE carts for all isolation patients.
  1. Miscellaneous
    1. Effectively communicate. This includes appropriately using Vocera, telephone system, and pneumatic tube system; answering patient call lights; reporting observations to the RN; keeping the RN informed about care delivered. It also includes the use of respectful, courteous, and professional behaviors in communicating with others.
    2. Perform other tasks appropriate to the scope of practice as delegated by the RN.
    3. Actively participate in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work environment.
    4. Demonstrate flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.
    5. Attend and participate in in services and meetings related to job role.
    6. Maintains current hospital mandatory education.
    7. Performs other related office duties and/or general clerical duties as requested.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
