General Summary:

The Cytology Supervisor oversees the technical operations of the cytology department in a high complexity laboratory. They are responsible for all cytology testing and reporting, identifying and resolving issues, serving as an expert within the assigned field of responsibility.

Requirements:

  • Graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or other organization approved by Health and Human Services (HHS); or
  • Certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS (eg, American Society of Clinical Pathology)
  • At least three years of full-time experience as a cytotechnologist within the preceding 10 years

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  1. Be accessible to provide consultation to resolve technical problems
  2. Record the slide interpretation results of each case he or she examined or reviewed
  3. For each 24-hour period, record the total number of slides he/she examined (screened/rescreened) or reviewed, as well as ensuring the recording of the total number of slides evaluated by others
  4. Record the number of hours he/she spent examining slides in each 24-hour period
  5. Enforce departmental and institutional policies and practices.
  6. Write, review and update departmental policies and procedures as mandated by accrediting or regulatory standards.
  7. Be responsible for:
    1. Selection of test methodology that is appropriate for the clinical use of the test results.
    2. Verification of the test procedures performed and establishment of the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and test system.
    3. Enrollment and participation in an approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered.
  8. Establishing a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed
  9. Establishing the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
  10. Resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  11. Ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
  12. Evaluates the competency of all testing personnel and assures that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
  13. Maintains inspection readiness for their department.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
