General Summary:

The K9 Program Manager for the Security Department K9 Team is responsible for the development, and implementation of the UM Health West K9 program. The K9 Program Manager will create a K9 program which will provide for the security and safety of all patients, visitors, volunteers, and staff; focused on reducing workplace violence and reducing risk and anxiety for patients, staff, volunteers and visitors by implementing a K9 community engagement program.

The K9 Program Manager will provide programmatic oversight of the UMHW K9 program to include K9 handler selection input, K9 selection, K9 training and K9 handler training, establishing policies and procedures, and procurement of required equipment for the program. Will establish the required competency level of proficiency of the K9 team and be responsible for oversight of initial training, ongoing training, and K9 team evaluation.

Requirements:

  • 8- 10 years of combined experience as a K9 handler in a law enforcement or healthcare setting.
  • Nationally Recognized Certified K9 Master Trainer
  • Served as a K9 trainer for a public service organization or healthcare facility

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Selects Handlers and Canines for the K9 Program via interviews, tests, home visits and background checks, as appropriate.
  2. Develops the K9 handler selection process to ensure the most qualified candidates are selected to ensure the success of the program.
  3. Conducts extensive testing to select the most qualified K9s for the program
  4. Trains the K9 team; researches and selects vendor services as appropriate; develops training calendar and logistics.
  5. Provide programmatic oversight to K9 team members; develops and assigns K9 handler work schedules; for training sessions; ensures maintenance of appropriate records.
  6. Develops K9 Program Policies and Procedures and ensures compliance.
  7. Establishes oversight guidelines for the operation of the K9 Teams.
  8. Develops and facilitates the initial K9 training program and weekly ongoing training program.
  9. Ensures appropriate compensation practices are aligned with requirements of Federal law.
  10. Oversees the selection and quality of veterinary care for dogs.
  11. Oversees vehicle purchase, modifications to canine specifications and ongoing maintenance.
  12. Selects and purchases appropriate training and accommodation equipment for dogs.
  13. Selects and purchases training and handling equipment for Handlers.
  14. Acquires necessary training aids for the K9 program.
  15. Acquires and maintains national and local licensing and certifications for K9 Program activities.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols, and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning, and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
