Surgical Board Scheduler - Cardiac Cath Lab * Days (M-F, 8a-430p) - 40hrs/wk

Shift: Days (Monday-Friday, 8a-4:30p)

General Summary:

The Surgery Boarding Scheduler functions as the focal communication point in the department and is responsible for surgical boardings and the smooth flow of the surgical schedule

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Associate Degree in Science or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in a hospital or business setting.
  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Excellent key boarding skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and communication skills (oral and written) required.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and perform duties in an independent manner with little supervision required.
  • Ability to adjust to constant changing working situations required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Receives and schedules verbal phone boarding and fax boarding from surgeons offices.
  2. Inputs demographic patient information, procedure type and additional information as identified in boarding policy for accurate boarding.
  3. Arranges for cancellations and rescheduling of procedures.
  4. Files boarding slips and forwards to appropriate department.
  5. Communicates with admitting, pre admit testing, and surgery coordinator on a daily basis to problem solve surgery schedule.
  6. Assign procedures based on physician block schedule.
  7. Maintain confidentially of all patient information.
  8. Communicates with the admitting department so verification of insurance information can be completed.
  9. Receives orders for pre op testing; i.e. laboratory requests, EKG, x-ray and consultative orders.
  10. Responsible to perform duties in an independent manner using critical thinking skills and minimum supervision.
  11. Communicates pro-actively with surgery nursing staff coordinator on conflicts in the schedule.
  12. Participates in surgery committees as assigned by Director and nurse manager.
  13. Responsible to promote positive communication to external customers such as physician offices.
  14. Promotes the hospital values and incorporates them into work performance.
