Surgical Technologist - Operating Room * Days - Resource

Shift: Days

General Summary:

The Surgical Technologist is a member of the operating room team who has the necessary knowledge and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon during surgical procedures and to maintain constant vigil of the sterile field

Requirements:

  • Graduate from an accredited surgical technologist program with eligibility to be certified as a surgical technologist (CST). Currently employed staff may have the following qualifications: Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse with experience performing surgical technologist functions.
  • Certified surgical assistant (CST) strongly preferred.
  • Two years of surgical / perioperative services experience preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider—required.
  • Basic computer skills (eg, Microsoft® Word).
  • Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skill utilized to attain desired patient outcomes as well as unit and hospital goals.
  • Ability to utilize delegation skills to coordinate and organize patient care delivery.
  • Effective time management skills to set priorities in work and to complete assigned work.
  • Effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and respect for patient’s legal rights and significant others rights including confidentiality

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Check physician profiles with the supplies on the procedural case carts to assure all necessary items are available for all procedures.
  2. Apply the principles of asepsis in setting up and maintaining the sterile field.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the sequence of events for surgical procedures.
  4. Display working knowledge of and dexterity in the use of required instrumentation and equipment.
  5. Demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to patient and family rights as identified in hospital policy.
  6. Apply safety principles as identified by the hospital and Surgery Department.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of appropriate emergency responses during scheduled and on-call hours.
  8. Remain calm and function competently during emergency surgeries.
  9. Assume responsibility for knowledge of and adherence to approved hospital policies, structure and process standards for the Surgery Department.
  10. Practice according to the standards of practice outlined by the Association of Surgical Technologists.
  11. Participate in in-service programs and continuing education activities to meet hospital and Surgery Department requirements.
  12. Participate in development of and attainment of self, department and nursing services goals and objectives.
  13. Participate in department standards development on a voluntary basis.
  14. Participate in data collection for quality assurance.
  15. Communicate pertinent information, problems, concerns or ideas to appropriate persons, following the line of authority, in a timely and effective manner.
  16. Cooperate with and assist members of the surgical team.
  17. Remain flexible in cooperation with shift scheduling needs for the Surgery Department
  18. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
